My next guest is Eos/Harper Collins author Tracey O'Hara whose debut novel, Night's Cold Kiss, won the Australian R*BY Award 2010 and was an Aurealis Award finalist! And no wonder, because this book is seriously fabulous! She also writes scorching Spice Briefs as Tracie Sommers. I first met Tracey on the RWA Paranormal loop, and then finally for real at the Sydney conference where she gave me promo pep talks (which I'm trying to follow, honest!!!)

And here she is, with the seductive Cleopatra and her forbidden loves.

The Delectable Cleopatra

While technically Cleopatra VII, Queen if Egypt is not Roman, she did have an affair with two of the most powerful men in Roman History and was driven to her death by a third. When I first starting planning this blog, it was going to be a about a love triangle, but after doing a little research to back up my facts – I realised that it was much more complex.

First – talk about forbidden love. Cleopatra first ruled alongside her father Ptolemy XII and was then married to not one, but two of her brothers, first Ptolemy XIII and then later Ptolemy XIV. It is also rumoured that she was instrumental is both of their deaths. Contrary to what Hollywood would have us believe – the marriages were apparently marriages in the traditional sense and not just a platonic marriage of state. Her parents Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra V had also been brother and sister and it was the way of the Egyptian ruling family.

While being married to her first brother, she met Gaius Julius Caesar. They were soon lovers and Cleo bore the much older Roman ruler a son, Caesarion. When Caesar had to return to Rome, Cleopatra followed him, in hopes to becoming his queen and setting up her son as the next in line to rule in Rome. But Caesar named his nephew, Augustus, as his successor and was soon after murdered. Cleo returned to Egypt with her son.

A few years later, after being accused of betraying Rome, Cleopatra was summoned before the great general Mark Antony. She arrived in style, on the royal barge, in all her finery and seduced Antony right off the bat. The two became lovers. And he returned to Alexandria with her for the winter.

I like to think that this was a love match. Octavian, the ruling Emperor of Rome, forced Mark into a marriage with Octavia, the Emperor’s sister. But the lure of the Queen of Egypt was too much. He returned to Egypt, divorced Octavia and married Cleo who went on to bear him three children.

The slight to the Emperor’s sister, and hence the Emperor himself, did not go unpunished. It started a war. Things didn’t go well for Mark and Cleo. When Octavian invaded Egypt in 30BC Mark Antony’s troops desert him and return Octavian. After their loss, Mark Antony commits suicide and Cleo follows suit by taking an asp to her breast (well the most popular theory anyway). Though Octavian does kill her son with Julius, Caesarion, he spares the three children she bore to Antony, taking them back to Rome raised by his sister Octavia Minor.

So a time in Roman history ruled by a woman who ruled her men. A clever, manipulative woman who brought down an empire, her Empire. The Last pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra VII

Thanks, Tracey! I'm looking forward to reading the second in your Dark Brethren Novels, Death's Sweet Embrace, due out next January. And to be in the running to win a copy of Night's Cold Kiss, just leave a comment for Tracey or tell us which kick ass heroine of the past you most admire!

And don't forget, you can still comment on Rachel Bailey's post to be in with a chance to win her book, and to enter the fab book bundle contest!

Day One ~ Tracey O'Hara

Very slowly working my way through my tbr piles - only problem is I keep adding to them so I'm not exactly making any headway!!! Anyway I've read a couple of fantastic books over the last couple of weeks, so I'm showcasing them here!

First up, Cari Quinn's debut, Full Disclosure, published by the Wild Rose Press:

Thirty-eight-year-old divorcee Holly Burrows has had enough of battery-operated love. Prompted by an ad left at her law office, she investigates Hunk Du Jour, a website designed to foster ‘adult connections’. After weeks of sexy emails and phone calls with surf hunk Kent, she's ready to test their chemistry in person. But first she has to get through lunch with her colleague Alex, a man with a brain as agile as his body. When their consultation ends with a bang, she barely remembers the man she'd lined up for dessert. Now she thinks she's juggling two hot young guys. How can she choose between her two gorgeous cubs – and why do they remind her of each other?

This is a complete scorcher! Sexy and erotic, I loved the emotional intensity and fireworks between Holly and Alex. I'm also a sucker for a hero with a sense of humour and several times I giggled at the interactions between Holly and the sinfully hot Alex! I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series about Holly's little sister, Haley!

Tracey O'Hara's Night's Cold Kiss, published by Eros an imprint of HarperCollins

For centuries war raged between the humans and Aeternus vampires—until courageous efforts on both sides forged a fragile peace.

But the rogue Necrodreniacs will never be controlled—addicted as they are to the death-high . . . and bloody chaos.

Since witnessing the murder of her mother, Antoinette Petrescu has burned with fiery hatred for the vampire race—even for Christian Laroque, the noble, dangerously handsome Aeternus who rescued her. Now an elite Venator, Antoinette must reluctantly accept Christian's help to achieve her vengeance—even as he plots to use the beautiful, unsuspecting warrior as bait to draw out the bloodthirsty dreniacs.

Night's Cold Kiss is the first book in the Dark Brethren series and I am hooked. Dark and powerful, I love the way Tracey pulls no punches . As an added bonus Tracey's just uploaded a prequel onto her website - Dante Rising - that shows the scene where Antoinette watches her mother's brutal murder. Chilling!

Delicious Debuts #3

I'm excited to welcome my special guest this week, Tracey O'Hara, another Aussie author whose debut book is hitting the shelves this week. I first cyber-met Tracey a few years ago on a RWA paranormal loop we're both members of and have been looking forward to reading Night's Cold Kiss for ages!!

Tracey joined the RWAus in 2004 and writes dark urban fantasy for Eos, an imprint of HarperCollins

Hi Tracey it's great to see you here! Can you tell us a little about your book?

My husband describes is as about 7 inched high with pages and a cover.

(Christina: OMG! That's so funny. Just like something my husband would say!!!)

But if you want to know what is about:

Yay! I love vampires. How did the idea for the plot come about?

The idea started with a visual image of a tomb raider type girl creeping through a dark warehouse with a male vampire watching her from the rafters. And then Night’s Cold Kiss was born.

I love that visual. I also love sale stories (ok I am just nosy!!) so can you tell us about your road to publication - and your call story?

After a late night drinking champagne at the 2008 Melbourne RWA conference, I woke at 6:30am to several emails on my smartphone - including 1 from my agent with the subject headers of "Urgent!" and another with a really heart stopping subject of "OFFER!!!" That one caught my attention, as you can imagine. I was lying in bed at this point. I sat up. The blood drained from my face. And I said, "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, My God."

My room-mate immediately sat up. "What's wrong?" "I think I have just SOLD." I couldn't feel my lips - my eyes couldn't believe that I was reading I had an offer from Diana Gill of Eos Books for a three-book deal. (Eos is the sci- fi/fantasy line of HarperCollins and published some of my favourite authors like Raymond E Feist, Kim Harrison and Vicki Pettersson.)

Three books. Not one, not two, but three books. There must be some mistake! There must be some other Tracey O'hara. But it was no mistake, it was all real as my agent reassured me when she rang my hotel room about an hour later. It was one of the most excruciating days of my life - I couldn't tell anyone yet. I had to sit through the lovely Margie Lawson's workshop, not taking in a word she said. I apologised to her later and she so understood.

I was able to tell some of my friends, thank goodness or I would have burst. Anyway, the next day I had formally accepted (no-brainer there) and I was able to tell everyone. Anne Gracie announced it. It was the absolute best conference.

Wow, that is some sale story! It must have been torture to keep that fabulous secret to yourself for a whole day!!!

Now onto the nuts and bolts. Do you write every day? Do you give yourself daily/weekly goals?

I try to write every day, or at least something writing related like editing. And yes especially when doing the first draft I set a daily goal, keeping track of it on an Excel spreadsheet.

So would you describe yourself as a panster or plotter?

A little of both, I plot the main story line then pants a lot of the in between. The characters tend to reveal how they react to things as I write. I guess I subconsciously know how it will go but sometimes I am still surprised to learn things about my characters.

I know that feeling only too well!! What keeps you motivated when the writing gets tough?

Well at the moment having a book due in real motivating.

Is there any advice or light bulb moment you'd like to share about getting/being published?

I really don’t have any light bulb moment - I still feel like such a babe in the woods with all this stuff. My first book has just been released so I am still learning new things every day.

Do you have critique partners (CPs)? If so can you tell us how you met up and your process?

I have my husband who is doing a copyediting course and I a close friend of mine who isn’t writing at the moment, but as soon as she is I will be so there reading for her. And I also have a beta reader. That’s it for the moment.
